How Contract Hire Vans Can Save Costs for UK Businesses

At Vertellus, we know running a fleet is a constant balancing act, keeping vehicles on the road while managing tight budgets, rising costs, and ever-changing regulations. Vans are the backbone of many businesses, but owning them outright can tie up capital, create unpredictable expenses, and add administrative burden. That’s where contract hire comes in. For UK businesses looking for flexibility, control, and cost certainty, it offers a smarter, more sustainable way to keep moving forward.

1. Preserve cash flow with no upfront costs

Buying vans outright can tie up tens of thousands of pounds in capital, money that could be better used to support growth, from hiring and marketing to investing in stock. Contract hire offers a more flexible alternative, giving you access to new, reliable vehicles without the upfront financial strain. With a fixed monthly cost, no concerns about depreciation, and no need to manage vehicle resale, it’s a simpler way to keep your business moving.

For many businesses, especially those with fluctuating income, protecting cash flow is critical. Contract hire helps reduce reliance on loans or credit, cutting down interest costs and improving financial agility. At Vertellus, we help you take control of your fleet costs so you can focus on what matters most: running your business.

2. Fixed monthly costs for better budgeting

One of the biggest challenges for fleet operators is unpredictability. With Vertellus contract hire, key expenses are bundled into a single monthly payment, including:

  • Routine maintenance and servicing
  • Road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty)
  • 24/7 breakdown cover

This consolidated billing removes the stress of surprise repair bills and simplifies budgeting. Businesses gain greater visibility and control over their fleet costs, enabling accurate forecasting and tighter financial management. Additionally, with maintenance included, vehicles are kept in optimal condition, reducing downtime and keeping your workforce on the move.

By outsourcing maintenance and admin tasks to Vertellus, businesses also reduce internal workload, saving time for fleet managers and administrative staff

3. Simplified compliance with emissions and safety standards

The rise of Clean Air Zones (CAZ) across UK cities has added new pressures to fleet operators. Non-compliant diesel vans face daily charges in many urban areas, making older vehicles costly liabilities. Vertellus addresses this by supplying Euro VI-compliant vans, ensuring fleets meet emissions standards and avoid penalties.

Our team handles regulatory requirements including MOTs, safety inspections, and vehicle certifications, removing administrative burdens from your team. For businesses operating under a restricted Operator’s Licence, this support is invaluable, especially where a dedicated transport manager may not be in place.

Having modern, compliant vehicles also improves brand perception. Clients and customers increasingly expect sustainability and compliance from their partners. Operating a clean, compliant fleet can support your business reputation as well as its bottom line.

4. Scalable and flexible fleet solutions

Fleet requirements don’t stay the same for long. As your business evolves, so do your vehicle needs. At Vertellus, we offer flexible solutions designed to scale with you, whether you’re expanding across regions or adjusting to seasonal demand. Our contract lengths and vehicle types can be tailored to support your operational goals, helping you stay agile without tying up capital.

This adaptability is especially valuable for businesses navigating busy periods or rapid growth. A retail operation, for example, might need extra vans during peak trading months without committing to year-round ownership. Contract hire makes it easy to add vehicles when you need them, and step back when demand slows.

With nationwide coverage and expert support, Vertellus helps you manage and grow your fleet with confidence. You’re not locked into rigid terms or left to handle logistics alone, we work with you to build the fleet strategy that fits your business.

5. A smarter path to sustainability

With the UK aiming to end the sale of new petrol and diesel vans by 2030, many businesses are actively planning their transition to electric vehicles (EVs). At Vertellus, we’re proud to support this shift by helping businesses move toward greener fleets in a way that suits their operational needs and timelines.

Our contract hire options include a growing range of electric vans, giving businesses the opportunity to integrate EVs into their fleets with confidence. Whether you’re ready to take the next step or just beginning to explore what’s possible, we provide the flexibility to adopt new technology at a pace that works for you. For businesses operating in areas where EV infrastructure is still developing, we also offer efficient Euro VI diesel vans as part of a balanced, future-ready strategy.

Vertellus provides expert guidance at every stage of the sustainability journey — from selecting the right vehicle types to supporting infrastructure planning, telematics, and driver training. Contract hire makes it easier to update your fleet as technology evolves, so you’re always equipped with vehicles that meet current and future standards.

Sustainability and cost-efficiency can go hand in hand, and Vertellus is here to help your business transition with confidence, backed by practical solutions and ongoing support.

Overcoming the Barriers to EV Adoption

For many businesses, transitioning to an electric vehicle (EV) fleet seems like a daunting move. Concerns over upfront costs, operational changes, and uncertainty about EV performance prevent fleet managers from making the switch. In fact, 60% of UK fleet managers cite ‘uncertainty about EV performance’ as their number one barrier to adoption* (*Source: SMMT)

The Vertellus EV Discovery Programme is designed to eliminate this uncertainty. By offering a structured, risk-free trial, businesses can explore the benefits of EVs without long-term commitments.

How the EV Discovery Programme Works

The Vertellus 12-month trial provides a straightforward, cost-effective way for businesses to evaluate EVs within their operations. Here’s how it works:

  1. Trial a 19T Electric Vehicle – Businesses can trial a fully operational 19-tonne Box, Curtain-Sider or Fridge for just £599/£749 per week – T&Cs apply
  2. Seamless Infrastructure Support – With the support of Zenobe, Vertellus takes care of everything from site surveys to charger installation, ensuring a hassle-free transition.
  3. Performance Monitoring & Expert Support – Throughout the trial, businesses receive data-driven insights, including energy consumption, enabling informed decision-making.

The Data-Driven Advantage

A key concern for businesses considering EV adoption is cost-effectiveness. Our data shows that companies using Vertellus’ trial programme typically experience a noticeable reduction in energy costs compared to traditional diesel fleets. Combined with lower emissions and reduced maintenance needs, the case for EV fleets is stronger than ever.

And the impact extends even further. In 2024 alone, operators in the EV Discovery Programme collectively achieved:

  • 115,955 kms travelled
  • 86.87 tonnes of CO₂ saved

That’s the equivalent of:

  • Taking nearly 40 diesel cars off the road for a year
  • Planting over 4,000 trees (absorbing CO₂ over 10 years)
  • Powering 15 UK homes for a year with clean electricity

These real-world results highlight not only the financial savings but also the environmental benefits of transitioning to an EV fleet with Vertellus.

We’re Here When You’re Ready

Switching to an EV fleet is a significant decision, and we understand that every business moves at its own pace. With the Vertellus EV Discovery Programme, you can explore the possibilities without pressure or long-term commitments. When the time is right for you, we’ll be here to support your transition.

Why now is the time to replace old HGVs with Contract Hire

At Vertellus, we speak to fleet managers every day who are weighing a tough decision: continue running older diesel vehicles that are becoming harder to maintain, or take the leap into electric – which is evolving quickly but still comes with new considerations. Sound familiar?

With tighter emissions regulations and rising maintenance costs, many fleets are exploring their options. And while electric HGVs are gaining momentum, they’re not the right fit for every operation just yet. If electric isn’t right for you at the moment, modern diesel contract hire still offers a smart, flexible solution to meet today’s demands.

In this blog, we’ll break down why now is the time to rethink your fleet strategy, explore the risks of sticking with older vehicles, and show how Vertellus can help bridge the gap from diesel to electric – without disrupting your operations.

The UK’s Ageing Fleet Problem

The UK’s HGV fleet is ageing, with the average vehicle now over 8 years old. This presents a significant challenge. According to the Department for Transport (2023), a HGV of that age emits around 40% more CO₂ than a modern Euro VI model. Older vehicles also tend to be more costly to operate and maintain, and increasingly fall short of compliance standards in major cities.

These older trucks are:

  • Less fuel-efficient
  • More prone to breakdowns
  • Subject to heavy Clean Air Zone (CAZ) charges
  • Rapidly losing residual value

Three Key Risks Fleet Operators Should Be Aware Of

  • 1. Depreciation Pressure: While specific projections vary, older diesel vehicles, particularly those not meeting Euro VI standards, are increasingly subject to depreciation pressures due to tightening emissions regulations and market shifts towards cleaner technologies.
  • 2. Clean Air Zone Charges: Non-compliant vehicles may incur charges of up to £100 per day in more than 10 UK cities (GOV.UK).
  • 3. Electric Vehicle Uncertainty: EVs are not expected to reach cost parity until 2030 (Energy Innovation), making diesel a continued necessity – but ageing diesel vehicles are no longer a sustainable solution.

Additionally, sustainability-focused customers are increasingly likely to prefer transport partners with cleaner fleets. Operators who stick with high-polluting trucks may find environmentally conscious clients looking elsewhere.

Building Toward an Electric Future – Without the Guesswork

While the push for zero-emission vehicles is growing, uptake remains slow. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), zero-emission heavy goods vehicles accounted for just 0.5% of new HGV registrations in the UK in 2024. Cost, limited charging infrastructure, and range limitations are still very real hurdles for most operators.

For many fleets, a phased approach makes sense – upgrade your diesel vehicles now to meet today’s standards, while laying the groundwork for electric as the technology matures. It’s not an either-or decision; it’s about building a fleet that’s ready for what’s next without taking unnecessary risks today.

To make this transition manageable, Vertellus provides a guided three-phase support model:

Phase 1: Diesel Modernisation – Upgrade to modern Euro VI trucks on flexible contracts. You’ll get cleaner, more reliable vehicles with fixed monthly costs and no Clean Air Zone charges to worry about.
Phase 2: EV Trials Made Easy – Curious about electric? Try it risk-free. Our EV Discovery Programme lets you trial a 19-tonne electric truck for 12 months, complete with charging support and maintenance. It’s a great way to learn what works for your routes without a long-term commitment.
Phase 3: Seamless Transition – When you’re ready, we’ll help you scale up electric vehicles – and scale down diesel – with flexible contract terms that adapt to your evolving needs.

Why Contract Hire Beats Buying in 2025

While owning your trucks may seem like control, it often means being tied to outdated technology, unpredictable costs, and the challenges of resale. Contract hire offers a more flexible and reliable alternative:

  • Fixed, Predictable Costs: Eliminate the uncertainty of repair bills. With contract hire, you’ll know exactly what you’re paying each month.
  • No Depreciation Concerns: We take on the risk of asset depreciation, allowing you to focus on running your business.
  • Modern, Compliant Vehicles: Our Euro VI fleet is CAZ-compliant and up to 90% cleaner than older diesel models.
  • Built-in Flexibility: Whether you need to scale up or down, our short- and medium-term contracts (with terms as short as 12 months) offer the flexibility to adapt.
  • EV-Ready When You Are: When electric becomes the right fit for your operation, we’ll help you trial and transition at a pace that suits your needs.
